New Drawing: Thorin in Bree pencil

I’ve been slowing down again a little. I also have a lot of in-progress things, so I really need to try to focus and get to them!

I finally decided to just finish this drawing, even though there were still things I wanted to do with it.

View finished drawing here.

Here is some info about it on the deviantART page:

My husband and I were so excited when Desolation of Smaug started, and you saw Thorin stomping around the streets of Bree. We could have watched him wandering town for the whole movie in all honesty! I actually envision this happening after Gandalf left Thorin to think about what he said, and still wondering about his lost father Thrain. :( Poor dwarf!

I was feeling a bit down while working on another drawing of Thorin, and I pulled out some regular drawing paper and meant to draw something else… but this happened. And I kept adding to it and adding more… it was actually meant more as a distraction to keep me drawing and get out of my blah mood. I had fun with it, except a few sections, but I’m still happy with it. Especially how Thorin turned out. I’m still trying to push myself to draw backgrounds a little more. I wish I had inked this drawing, but since it was on thinner paper that’s not as smooth, I had to use pencil.

Drawn on Strathmore drawing paper, using a variety of art pencils (2H, 4H, F, HB, 3B, 4B, 6B, 8B… you get the idea… ;) heheheh). Photographed in B&W, and had a little trouble cropping out non-paper/drawing sections without losing detail of the drawing I wanted to keep.

I have another drawing of Thorin to finish soon, and I desperately need to get sewing as well. I feel like I’ve run out of steam! Oh no!

Blue & Silver Elven Costume Diaries

I finally have the costume page about the latest outfit.

There isn’t a lot of information, as I mostly followed a pattern and it was so long ago most of the details were forgotten.

There are still things I wish I could fix on the whole outfit (both the gown and the corset), but we’ll see if I bother doing anymore work to either.

Speaking of the corset, I also added a little more to the new Blue & Silver Corset’s page.

DFWCG 2014 Fantasy Frolic Photos

I said I was cutting back on costuming and events until the end of this year to focus a little more on art. Next year, I’m hoping I can balance both hobbies a little more.

So there are only a few events I’ve picked out for some low-stress costume fun.

Unfortunately for me, I have missed a few of the ones I planned to attend due to other things popping up, and I almost had to miss yet another one! A very kind friend came to the rescue and I did manage to attend!

I will need to make a costume page for my new/recycled outfit, but in the meantime I wanted to link to the event photos.

This was a fantasy-themed picnic. It was very windy that day, but the location was sheltered by a lot of trees and I adored the setting. Perfect for the theme!

Sadly, I only had my iPhone with me, so I didn’t get too many photos, but my friend sent me a lot of great photos she took of me.

I seem to be focusing on accessories

I’ve figured out that I can trick myself to get sewing quicker if I make an accessory. Plus, it’s a nice way to freshen up an old outfit you never wear anymore, right?

This took me a handful of days to make. I used lightweight materials — but it’s all from my stash. Gotta love that! How nice, to actually have something in my stash that I can use. Ha! I’ve been a little envious of people who have good stuff to dig through, while I always feel like I need to stock up on good basics and never have enough of any of that kind of thing. Sometimes it’s also nice to have an event that’s not period-specific.

In fact, it’s fantasy.

I’m trying to get a costume together for a fairy picnic coming up, and I want to be an elf again. I thought it might be fun to use an old gown I never wear anymore. It also might be a little more trail-friendly so I can wander around without having to worry about long, flowing, sheer sleeves and a train. 😉

But at least I’m keeping busy!

New Drawing: Thorin Smiling

I’m in the middle of finishing some sewing for next weekend, but I’ve been very busy this past week. This is good — I’ve been in a little bit of a slump lately for whatever reason, and not only did I finally finish the drawing of Gloin, but I’ve been sewing too as I mentioned.

I woke up Easter morning and was just in such a nice mood… I drew another sketch. This one was also as a bit of a “thank you,” especially to those who have been so incredible showing such interest in my art and sharing it (I also have had some kind comments about my sewing recently as well). Well, I’ll just quote what it says on the deviantART page:

I’ve been so touched by how supportive everyone has been regarding my art. Since I have been struggling to get back what I’d lost all those years, and push myself and improve, it’s been frustrating at times — but you all have made it such fun for me to do it. I woke up early on Easter morning and felt inspired to draw a quick pencil sketch of Thorin, smiling — something I have been doing a lot lately when I enjoy creating and sharing things.

I will leave it up to each one of you to decide what is making him smile. :)

Drawn in my sketchbook using blue pencil (this B&W photo did not pick them up), and 2H, 2B, and 6B pencils.

So here is my quick drawing of Thorin smiling here. 🙂

New Drawing: Gloin’s Locket

I certainly took my time with this one — I promised to draw it for my friend Gloin (on Facebook), but since the first drawing I did of that character was also my first ink after a very long break… it was a bit shaky and rushed. This time, I wanted to do something a little more special. 🙂

A little from the info page:

Black Magic ink and inkwash on 11×14 Bristol, using Winsor & Newton series 7 sable brushes (sizes 2 and 3). Also used black and white pencils for some details. Sketched first in blue pencil directly to the Bristol, using a photo ref of my husband posing for the drawing.

And here‘s the link to the finished drawing. Be sure to check out the large size so you can see more of the detail. Thanks for looking!

I’m still around!

It doesn’t seem like it at times, especially here on my blog.

When I first started blogging here, I used to update frequently enough — I still was not quite sure what I wanted to do with the website, aside from letting family and friends know what I was up to.

Once I started sewing and this past year drawing again, I mostly have used it to share those hobbies specifically. I stopped updating as frequently, so the (especially finished) projects wouldn’t be buried amongst a flood of babbling posts about nothing.

For whatever reason, I’ve started slowing down again with all my hobbies (I’m sure losing my brother this past October didn’t help). The frustration of having to switch back and forth between sewing and art was also hard to focus on. I spent so many years being on a deadline creatively, it’s rather nice to take my time and work on what I want. And, if I wanted to spend a lot of time researching or trying new techniques before diving in to the actual project… even better!

I think that’s what’s been hitting me the most. I found, when I was working on one project because I had to, I realized I was annoyed that I couldn’t work on the one calling to me the strongest. I was already discovering that about projects in the same hobbies, regardless of whether it was art or sewing. It’s not that I can’t work on a deadline, it’s just that as I said… I spent so much time in the past doing that for art especially. There just comes a point where you start realizing those hobbies meant to be fun aren’t as fun anymore. At least until you figure out what it is you want from them now.

Also, this year, I had decided to mostly focus on the art since the last Hobbit movie comes out this December… and I admit I feel that stress of “oh, I really would like to finish this, and that! And ohhhh! It would be fun to buy new paints and go all out and do this one!” Since I will be mostly drawing, there were only a few costuming events I considered attending, just to save my time and budget. Sadly, due to various things popping up, I have not been able to attend any of the events I’d been looking forward to. I only have two (that I can remember) left in the year, and I’m already wondering if I’ll have to change plans or skip those events. I guess I’ll see. I’m trying not to feel pessimistic about it, but at the same time it’s rather disappointing when you essentially put all your eggs in one basket, only to realize that basket needs to be set aside. *slaps forehead*

The most recent drawing is taking me longer than I expected it to. I am still currently working in ink and inkwash, but I’m wanting to push myself a little more. This is also a drawing I’d promised a friend last year (*winces* I’m not wanting to see if it’s officially been a full year or more), and since my very first inked image was of this character, I swore I’d do a much better job on this one. While some of the image is in my usual inked brushlines, you can see the background is getting painted in ink wash:

A section from the current drawing I’m working on. I’m having to stop often, letting the paper dry fully before adding even more layers to get the results I need. It’s slow-going, since ink can be a little harder to work with at times. Plus, sometimes I’m just not in the mood to work on it! 😉

So, I keep stopping and considering, changing details, thinking of different ways of finishing a section. In some ways, it’s been good, because I’ve caught a few things that would have been mistakes (sometimes not, since taking too long and forgetting something means I had to change plans yet again). This is a piece I want hanging on the wall too, so if I’m going to be staring at it, I want to feel like I’ve made better progress in shaking off the rust.

Unfortunately, I’m not thrilled with how long it’s taking me. I used to be very fast before I stopped drawing, but I swore I would never be sloppy again. I don’t have a lot of space, so what I do draw I want to be pleased with. Quality over quantity. I just think I need to stop overthinking things too much, have a little more faith that I can do something at a decent speed, and just do it.

Also, and maybe it’s something with the changing of the seasons… I’m not sure, but I’m just feeling slightly lazy. There are times I’ll decide I’m going to do one thing or another, and at the last minute decide I’d much rather cuddle up with my husband and watch a movie or go out and do something. He’s even sort of going through the same thing, despite needing to focus on his various writing projects. So maybe it is something in the “air?”

And of course, the recent Hobbit movie coming out didn’t help. This particular set even came with really cool bookends. Ooooh! Great! Speaking of not having much space, I think it’s time to rearrange some bookshelves. *laughs*

The 3D Collector’s Set of Desolation of Smaug. No, we don’t have 3D… but we did want those really cool bookends! Of all the collectibles we’ve bought so far, my hubby especially seemed excited about them!

Hmmm, with all of the projects I already need to work on, I think I should add reorganizing some shelves! Running out of space!

New Drawing and My Inking Tutorial

I finished the latest drawing, and I also have my second Facebook note about how I did it. Since I’ve had a lot of folks ask what I’m talking about, I’m hopeful this will help illustrate my process. 🙂

You can find the note here on FB. It’s pretty long, but there are also a lot of photos.

Although I kind of want to go back and do a little more work on the drawing, it’s time to move on… (if the image doesn’t load, I apologize. deviantART has been acting weird this morning):

Focusing on Art

Some of the supplies I use when I draw in pencil or inks. See the link listed below to see some more items.

For whatever reason, I seem to be going through a really bad funk. No worries though — I’ll be okay.

Unfortunately, it makes it difficult for me to focus on things. So… I have been making very little to no progress on sewing — even when it seemed like nothing was really going wrong with it! I’ve decided to just relax and not push myself with that hobby (I would hate to end up not enjoying it), and work on it here and there when I’m not putting so much pressure on myself.

I refuse to ignore all hobbies, however, and since art isn’t as stressful and is very budget-friendly… drawing it is!

I’m currently working on another inked dwarf drawing, and decided to start taking some notes and photos during the process. I’ve had a lot of folks ask me what I use, and how I do things. I’m trying to break things up into smaller categories to organize it a bit better (that, and I babble way too much).

I’m posting them on my Facebook page, and the first one is up already. I started with the supplies I use for pencil and ink drawings, so focusing on my black and white art. You can see the note here. When I get back to coloring drawings, I’ll do another note on those supplies.

When I finish the latest drawing, I’ll post a note showing the progress of how I did it.

And thanks for your patience. I know I have a lot of costumers following me, and no… I’m not quitting forever. I guess we all find ourselves in this place eventually for various reasons, and I’m sure I’ll get back to it again soon. 🙂 I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone else is making though — I may not always reply, but it’s always wonderful seeing such creative and beautiful garments being made. Enjoy!

I’m back (on FB)

Well, that didn’t last as long as I planned.

I ended up coming back before my personal goal of waiting until March before logging back on to Facebook. It just wasn’t working out for me this time.

It didn’t help that shortly after logging out, I ended up getting sick (my husband had been sick the week before). Most of the people I know and keep up with all use FB. So… my not being there meant I didn’t talk to too many people, especially since I don’t really get out in “real life” too often. I live a little too far away from most of my friends and family to do that regularly (plus, I didn’t want to get them sick).

I did update some of the graphics on various social media sites. That was kind of fun, but I’m sure it wasted a little time I could have been sewing. I did get some sewing done, but I’m not as far along as I’d hoped to be. I even tried sketching a little, but I need to get out and run some errands so I can proceed with some of the drawings I’ve had planned. That was the worst — between being sick, and ice days, I couldn’t get out to run errands or buy sewing supplies. Argh! And I won’t get into those times I just wasn’t in the mood to sew.

Of course, sometimes it’s good that you don’t just dive in without thinking. As it turns out, I realized something with my current sewing project, that had I not taken things slowly, I’d be ripping out stitches. I can’t afford to make a ton of mistakes right now, and I’m not working from instructions or a pattern, so I have to contemplate all the steps and the order to do them. And since my sewing skills are a little rusty from not using them as frequently or recently, and my poor brain has other things on its mind… you can just imagine how slowly I am working when I do. 😉

I am going to continue on the current project (plural, as it’s a whole new era, and I need all the layers), but I’m not going to torture myself about a deadline and rush things. If I have to wear modern clothes (or dress as a “muggle” as we put it in our costuming group), then so be it. I’ll take photos and still have fun seeing my friends. I just don’t want to potentially mess up something — especially a garment as important as the foundation all the clothing will be built around. I’ll get my spirits back up eventually (getting over this cold completely and getting back to fitness should help a lot with my blues), and get my focus back. Once I feel a little more confident about my pattern, I’m sure I’ll even have fun again.

I hate that point where you still aren’t fully sure something you drafted will work out — it seems like it’s going to work, but it worked up a little too easily, and you really won’t be sure until it’s almost done. Well, you start getting a little paranoid or at the least, lose a bit of confidence.

So, there we go…
