New Thorin Drawing For Fun

I have understandably not been feeling up to doing much the past couple weeks. I know it takes a little time sometimes to get back to your old self when bad things happen.

This past week was a little more frustrating. I wanted to get back to drawing (still not sewing for a while — in fact, not sure if I will be attending the event in mid-November or what I’d even wear. Might not know until the day before, or even right before the event), but I still have not fully regained decent focus (or caring too much), and I feel horribly awkward and annoyed.

So I needed to do something fun and see if I could try to draw something at least.

I was originally going to do a quick cartoon-style drawing, but I do think I like drawing the dwarves using this style the most now. I also was not sure if I should draw it in black pencil (darned sharpeners keep breaking the point off of those pencils… miss my old sharpener), or ink it. I needed to work quickly. So I ended up grabbing a couple art pencils. I usually only use pencil in quick outline form so I have something to work with later for inks. I haven’t tried drawing in pencil “seriously” in way too long. It was actually kind of fun! Now I want to pick up some more of those.

Anyway, yes… it’s a bit of a silly drawing — today is the birthday of a friend of mine, plus I love having images like this to use when needed (I left off the candles and other cake decorations so it could also be a generic cake for non-birthday sharing). I also made some mistakes since I had to rush it. I am having fun working out some of the details of Thorin and his costume and how I like to draw him. I still need to sit down and draw the pattern of his vambraces so I have that handy. By the time I get around to doing those, which is usually the very last thing, my vision has blurred to nearly double/out-of-focus and I can’t tell what’s what. *laughs*

But at least I drew. As usual, check out the link on deviantART for the full-size image and more information about the drawing itself.

Bad news, project update, and an early birthday present

For those who know me, or follow my Facebook page, you probably saw that I lost my brother this month. Death itself can be a hard thing to work through, and the circumstances behind my brother’s death were very hard to take.

I decided that the stress of trying to finish my current gown project in time for an event in mid-November just was not worth it. Not only is my mind wandering and not thinking straight, the gown itself is a little different than what I’ve done before, and I was not sure if I would have trouble finding the rest of the items I needed. I just wanted to take my time and enjoy the process. I can always wear something old if I need to.

My birthday is on Halloween, and my husband wanted to know my plans about the gown so he could make a decision on my present (it also helped me to make that decision so I could stop stressing about it and kicking myself when I just couldn’t do any work on it). I guess the minute I made the decision not to finish it by that deadline, he made the purchase…

And he surprised me with something I’ve been wanting for most of this year. Thorin Oakenshield’s sword, Orcrist! I even got to open it about a week early, and he loves it as much as I do.

We had so much fun taking photos of us opening the Key to Erebor, that we decided to do that for this one. Unfortunately, I took *so* many photos, I decided to make up a separate page for it.

I’ve seen a lot of replica prop collectors doing this, and it’s so much fun (especially on those expensive items you know you’ll probably never get to own) I kind of want to at least try to do the same for each item we purchase like this.

>>>> Click here <<<<  to see the photos and read about the United Cutlery Orcrist Replica.

I don’t really do reviews, but it’s nice to have an idea of the sort of things you purchase, especially if you’re like me and get nervous ordering things you can’t buy in person.

I have not really had much of a chance to start working on the dwarf costumes. It’s going to be a while, still — I’m hoping to start getting some books and learning a few things soon. Since I have been purchasing a few items and making a few things like accessories, I figured it would be handy to start a section for those costumes and items on my costume page.

Thank you SO much to my sweet husband, Christopher. He is my best friend, and I am so happy he is there for me through it all — good times, and bad.

New mitts

See the link below for more photos and the sewing information.

I really shouldn’t be working on another accessory, but why not?

I’ve been wanting to try to fix my mitt pattern and make another pair. It’s getting closer, but still not quite what I’m wanting yet. I guess I’ll have to keep at it! 😉

Time is running out though, and I still need to add decorations to my hat as well as make my new gown. I’m not really nervous about it though, and am almost keeping a “don’t really care” attitude about it so I won’t panic.

I admit too, I’m kind of hoping the day will be a little on the chilly side for the picnic. I would love to be able to wear my new mitts, and maybe even bring the black muff. I tend to be a little hot-natured, so I’m not sure if it would be that chilly yet.

I definitely hope it’s not windy, though. I’d like to wear my hat. Ha!

Please see the link below for the new mitts, and hopefully I can keep focused and finish my gown in time!

If not, I guess I’ll wear something old and work on the gown at my own pace. Always better to be happy and stress-free with hobbies! 😉

September 2013 Accessory Challenge: Hats

WHEW!

I lost about half the month to work on my hat due to getting injured, and then having to wait until the weekend to get the outer fabric (I had to go a little bit of a distance to a fabric district).

This is also the first time I have made a hat from scratch (I made a small bonnet once), and I chose not only to use “off” supplies, I picked the biggest hat I could possibly sew! 😉

I went with a late 18th century picture hat (made famous by Thomas Gainsborough and ladies like Georgiana).

This is my first time to do a challenge, and I already have a format on my costume pages, so I’m just going to keep the same format and try to make sure I answer the questions. I remembered to take plenty of photos and I babble quite a bit (there was only one step, covering the brim, that I didn’t bother taking photos of).

I will be skipping the October challenge, since I have a gown to sew, but I’m hopeful I can do something for November’s challenge.

Please see the link below for the hat photos and information!

Thanks for looking! *curls up for some well-earned sleep, and no sewing for at least a day!*

Stairs are not my friend, and new a drawing

So far, I’m a little behind on a lot of things I’d planned on doing. Because… *blushes* on August 23rd, I missed the last step leaving my 2nd floor apartment, and sprained my foot/ankle. Ouch! Fortunately, I’m almost healed, and I cannot wait to get back to walking and my usual fitness routine. I’m especially looking forward to hiking once cooler weather sets in!

I have not been sewing, and I desperately need to get that back on track. I have an event I’m hoping to attend in mid-November, and I’m a little nervous about some of the things I need to make. My husband will not be dressing up since his costume is still not finished. It would just be too much for me to deal with. There will be other times.

I do have a problem, though. I can’t seem to stop sketching dwarves! I think the pile of sketches is building up too quickly (including the one I’d started the day I had my accident with the last step), but I keep starting new ones. It’s just so much fun to come up with ideas, and it’s a little easier on me to draw than it is to move furniture to get to sewing supplies, or kneel on the floor to cut out fabric.

At least I do have a new finished drawing to share! I sketched it when I was just starting to walk without crutches, wanting to see if I could handle sitting at my art table. I kept playing with it and finished inking it today! Please check out the full-sized image on deviantART, along with other details about how I drew it.

An Accessory a Month Challenge

I usually try not to take on extra challenges or goals unless they work well with what I’ve already got planned.

I have a limited budget, and since I work slowly, my time is also limited when it comes to my To Do List. I have lots of hobbies, and the things I want to make well, it’s a very long list and seems to get longer faster than I can mark things off!

But when I saw mention of Trystan’s Accessorizing Head to Toe Challenge, it caught  my attention! Especially since the first goal matches what I need to make soon anyway!

I may not be able to make every challenge on the list (in fact, I may skip the second challenge since I already have plenty of bags and will be in the middle of a mad sewing rush for more important items that have a deadline), but I’m looking forward to seeing what else might match up with some of my already existing goals.

Inked Thorin Drawing

I finally finished one of the sketches I had drawn a little while back. After a lot of fretting and wondering I finally went out and bought a new brush. I love the Winsor & Newton series 7 brushes. I was taught by a comic book inker how to ink, and not only did he recommend Black Magic ink to me, he gave me one of his old brushes. I’ve since bought my own — in larger sizes of 2 and 3, for filling spot blacks, as well as the 1 I used as the main inking brush for a while, and now the smaller size 0.

I was worried I would lose some of the details I loved in the blue pencil transfer, and it was such a small space (and I’m still a bit shaky and getting used to drawing again)… well, I wasn’t sure I should ink it. I really wanted to use inks, however. I also wanted to use the ink like watercolor. In fact, I ended up doing that a little more than originally intended.

I’m pleased with the results! My husband wants to frame this drawing and the previous one of Gloin that I drew. Now to figure out what type of frames, and where to put them!

Please see the deviantART page for more information about the piece (as well as links to the original sketch, and a section of the blue pencil transfer).

I also picked up a few more supplies for another project when I bought my new inking brush. There are a few more things I need to get, but hopefully I can start testing some things out and get to work on that project. In the meantime, I’m sure I’ll work on another drawing soon! 🙂 It’s been too much fun!

Babbly repetitiveness brought to you by random headache! I think I need a nap!

New Facebook Page

You could probably tell I’m on several social networking sites.

However, one that I never had listed was Facebook.

I am on Facebook with a personal profile, but I mostly kept it private and hardly mentioned it to most people.

Recently, I’ve been chatting a lot with acquaintances I met elsewhere on FB and did not have on my FB friend list, as well as FB pages (who cannot comment on even your public posts).

While sharing photos with one of those pages (waves “hello” in case he is reading this 😉 ), I realized it was getting difficult to remember where the best place would be to post something where he and others could see it, without having it show up in my main galleries (Flickr, deviantART, etc). And he still couldn’t reply to that image directly for various reasons. Not very convenient for either of us!

So I decided to create a Facebook page for my sewing and art projects.

You can find it here: CFGriffith Projects  — as well as in the right sidebar with my other social media links.

I think I will continue posting things on my FB page, such as the tools I use for sewing and drawing, or in-progress images and sketches. The types of things I most likely would not want on my blog, Flickr, or deviantART gallery. Not to mention, also to post links to finished projects on deviantART, my website, and photo albums on Flickr. A bit more of a “chatty” and quick/less-detailed updating place, if you know what I mean.

Also, I’m still currently on a bit of a break from sewing, so I’m mostly focusing on art at the moment. I plan to eventually balance both, but I suspect it will be a low-traffic page unless I’m really working on a lot of projects quickly. And then, I may not be doing much updating so I can focus on those.

Finally inked a drawing

Unfortunately, I ended up skipping the event I made the accessory for. I never even finished putting ribbons on it. Perhaps another time. Maybe it will even give me a chance to possibly seal it so rain won’t ruin it (it was raining the day of the event — and my husband was also working over the weekend).

About the inked drawing…

I still feel incredibly clumsy, but I was able to finally ink something!

I use a brush when I ink (Windsor & Newton series 7 size #1), and in the past I was so used to doing that. I was perfectly comfortable using a brush and throwing down some lines in ink. However, when I inked Thursday, I felt shaky and even ended up with a death grip on the brush and my hand cramped. Not to mention, I could barely see (something I always had a problem with in the past, but it usually didn’t happen in the middle of working on art — mainly after I stepped away from the drawing table). Oof! I guess I really have a ways to go before I’m literally comfortable doing art again.

If I could offer any advice, it would be this:

If you have a hobby you love doing, don’t stop for too long. It’s really frustrating going back to it later, even if it’s something you’ve done most of your life.

I could obviously pick apart what I did, but I’m just going to say I’m happy enough that I did it and hope the person I drew it for is also pleased.

To read more about it, as well as see a bigger size (and a link to the sketch I worked from), go to my deviantART account.

A Quick Accessory

A quick costume accessory, that still needs a little finishing. This is a very small pendant — it’s about 1.5″ long and just over 1″ wide. I’ve never worked on something that small before. Thankfully, the design was very simplified!

This one doesn’t really involve sewing, however.

I mentioned recently that I am taking a little break from sewing, and getting back to art. Due to lack of a scanner, and still trying to figure out how best to get all the things I need to my temporary drawing space, I have not been finishing any art.

Normally, I use a brush and ink, but I’ve been a little worried about spills!

I have something coming up this weekend, and will be wearing my chemise a la reine. Again. It seems like that’s been one of the only things I’ve worn over the past year! I’m not sick of it, but I worry that it seems as if I have nothing else to wear. *laughs* So, I decided I wanted to have something new, even if it was not much.

I made the mourning pendant you see at the top of this entry, and based it off of this one.

There are some differences, and things I wish I had done better, but I was feeling a little rushed and leaning over my kitchen counter while I hurriedly painted it. I think it actually looks best when viewed from a distance, so I’m pleased with it so far. We’ll see how wearing it goes this weekend.

It isn’t finished yet, I still have some ribbons to add (not to mention, should I pin it as a brooch? Should I make a necklace from it?), as well as getting some photos. Once I have finished those last few things, I’ll add the costume page with details.

At least now I’ve finally cracked open that new bottle of ink and maybe that will inspire me to figure out those last few things keeping me from finishing some art! 😉
